Alleging that over 30 per cent of the total sales of pipes in the market are "spurious", pipe maker Surya Roshni today sought strict execution of laws against manufacturers of sub-standard steel pipes.
"Today sale of spurious pipes comprise over 30 per cent of the total steel pipe market," Surya Roshni Limited Chairman & Managing Director Jaiprakash Agarwal told reporters here.
He alleged that over 100 manufacturers are pushing their inferior steel pipe products in the market.
These inferior pipes are manufactured by using spurious inputs, which reduces the life of the products by 2-3 years, Agarwal said.
On the other hand pipes sold by Surya Roshini under the brand name 'Prakash Surya' lasts for 30 years, he added.
He alleged that many "fraud" manufacturers are using "duplicate ISI" mark to hoodwink the customers.
Agarwal said though manufacture and sale of steel pipe is covered by Essential Commodities Act, which has a provision for sentencing the defaulters to seven years jail, but "implementation of the law is dismal".
The Rs 1,750 crore Surya group chairman said, on several occasion he has asked the central government to provide BIS (Bureau of Indian Standard) with "biting teeth" to nab such culprits, but desired results are yet to come.
