Eyeing better sales on this year’s Akshaya Tritiya, organised retail players here are trying to lure customers with special offers and discounts.
Thanks to lower prices, Akshaya Tritiya would lure more customers to the showrooms this year, said B A Ramesh, joint managing director, Thangamayil Jewellers.
Retailers in Tamil Nadu expect robust sales, including the advanced bookings on Akshaya Tritiya, which is considered an auspicious day to buy new jewellery. There are around 12,000 big showrooms and 10,000 small jewellery outlets in the state.
Major organised retailers have announced various offers to attract customers. Tata group company Tanishq is offering a gold coin for jewellery purchased from showrooms between April 17 and 21.
GRT Jewellers here is offering an equal weight of silver for the gold jewellery purchased from its showrooms on Tuesday.
Kalyan Jewellers, which opened its flagship showroom here recently, would increase the competition among organised retail jewellery chains in the city, said sources.
Experts say that the discount war among jewellers has come to a level where all offer almost the same discount and it is no more a market that could be captured through a price war.
Sales on Akshaya Tritiya would be 15-20 per cent higher than a normal day’s business, according to D R Raghunath, president of the Tamilnadu Jewellery Federation, an organisation of 85 jeweller associations in the state, with a collective membership of around 30,000 jewellers.
For the last around three years, the retailers have been introducing discounts to a level that it is not possible for any player to offer more than what everybody else offers.
