Kangana Ranaut’s double role in Tanu Weds Manu Returns (TWMR) has wowed audiences and made the movie one of the year’s biggest weekend opener. Directed and co-produced by Aanand L Rai, the movie is second only to Akshay Kumar starrer Gabbar (Rs 40 crore) to have the second highest opening weekend collection at Rs 38.15 crore.

TWMR is the sequel to the 2011 hit romantic comedy Tanu Weds Manu, also starring Ranaut and R Madhavan in the lead and directed by Rai.

The movie has been made at a budget of Rs 30 crore. Analysts believe that the movie will have a lifetime collection of between Rs 80 to 85 crore, which meaas that the movie will make its makers profits solely through its domestic box office collections. The international collections, and ancillary revenues like music and satellite rights fees would only add to profits.

This is not the first movie this year that has surprised audiences and trade pundits with a massive jump from the first day collection. A couple of Fridays ago, Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Piku pulled off a similar feat collecting Rs 5.5 crore on the opening day, and ending its opening weekend with Rs 25 crore. The film has collected Rs 71 crore in its 16-day run so far, and is still drawing strong audience count at cinemas halls across the country .
