The company is laying off around 180 employees in India and eliminating around 125 vacant positions as a part of this initiative. The company said by this, it is creating a more nimble, agile and efficient structure in response to the rapid changes in retail technology and evolving consumer expectation. This would involve prioritising resources, reducing complexity and controlling costs.
"In that regard, earlier this year, Target announced that we would be undergoing a comprehensive corporate restructuring which would include headcount reductions, primarily at our headquarters locations. Since that time, we have implemented several changes. Along those lines, we informed our Target India team that we are eliminating approximately 180 positions," the company said in response to an email query.
Considered as one of the most successful global in-house centres in India, Target India started in the country in 2005 out of Bengaluru which it says is an extension of the company's headquarters. Presently, it has a headcount of over 2,800 people who work in areas like storefront designing, merchandising, big data and analytics and help the parent in multichannel retailing capabilities.
"We completed a comprehensive review to determine which functions and positions should be eliminated to enable us to create a more nimble, efficient structure, while keeping in mind the capabilities needed for the future of the business," the company added.
"These are difficult decisions for Target but we continue to believe that the steps we are taking are the right ones for the future," it added.
