The Punjab and Haryana High Court has put a restraint on the Tata Camelot Housing Colony Project ‘Camelot’ coming up in the vicinity of Chandigarh.
The restraint is understood to be on the future sale, booking and construction activity pertaining to the project.
The project, coming up in Kansal village, Punjab (near periphery of Chandigarh), started courting controversy last year, following reports that the high rise multi-storey building was alleged to be coming up in violation of the New Capital Periphery Act (1952).
The matter came up for hearing in the Punjab and Haryana High Court yesterday following a suo moto cognizance and public interest litigation (PIL) filed in the High Court by an advocate, Alok Jagga, who raised his voice over his concern for the city.
Coming in the vicinity of Capitol Complex (spread from Rajindra Park to Sukhna Lake) the project, besides offering a veiled view of the Shivalik hills from Chandigarh, could pose environmental concern and is viewed as a threat to the potential heritage status of Chandigarh, which has been nominated for the UNESCO list.
Meanwhile, THDC, in a release, has maintained that the “counsels of Tata Housing and Hash Developers assured the High Court that no construction activity or sales activity would be undertaken on the project till the company receives further direction. Tata Housing and Hash Developers have complete faith and confidence in the due process of the law and will wholeheartedly abide by any orders passed by the High Court.”
The High Court directed Punjab, Haryana and the Chandigarh to convene meetings of the Coordination Committee instituted for the integration of the respective master plans to ensure harmonious growth plans for the area. The High Court indicated, an early decision in this matter needs to be taken and directed to all those concerned to convene a meeting within four weeks and the reports of the coordination committee had to be in place on or before the next date, February 28, 2011.”
