As part of its endeavour to facilitate empowerment, especially for tribal women at Kalinganagar, Tata Steel has kick started the inter-village SHG (Self-Help Group) competition at its Gobarghati rehabilitation colony from September this year. This is the second consecutive year that the event is being organized by Tata Steel.
The six-month long competition among members of the women SHGs called Tejaswinis was inaugurated by Prof. Asha Hans, social activist and renowned writer on women empowerment.
More than 1,000 women from 70 SHGs are participating in the Tejaswini competition. At the end of the competition, the top-three Tejaswinis will be given awards on the Oriya New Year Day in 2011 for excellence in their respective fields of work.
The Tejaswni competition at Kalinganagar is being judged by the women PRI (Panchayati Raj Institution) members of Kalinganagar.
Further, as a part of this Tejaswini programme, members of the women SHGs are also being trained at the Gandhi Labour Foundation in Puri on various socio-economic issues at regular intervals.
The support provided by Tata Steel to the Tejaswinis has enabled them to not only sell their products in the local market but also outside it.
