India's organised temporary staffing industry is growing annually at 18 to 20%, with temporary recruitments in the IT sector alone jumping about 19% last year, according to TeamLease.

Staffing services firm TeamLease today said the country's temporary staffing industry is slowly maturing, especially with more sectors opening to the idea.

"With an estimated 90 million temporary workforce, out of which about 500,000 are engaged by the organised sector, Indian organised temporary staffing industry is growing at 18 to 20% year-on-year," it noted.

TeamLease Annual Temp Salary Primer 2011 released today showed that median salary hikes for temporary staffs rose to 7.3% last year from just 5.2% in 2009.

"Temporary staff hiring is up by as much as 19% in 2010 for IT and salary increments are between 10 to 12%," the report said. The IT industry shelled out an average salary of Rs 13,200 for temporary staff, it added.

As per the report, the contract duration of a typical temporary job in the country varies between 2-18 months.

"The current 90 million temporary workforce in India is only the tip of the iceberg as salaries converge between temporary and permanent jobs," TeamLease Services Vice-President Sangeeta Lala said.

Thirteen industry verticals that have active temporary staffing practices, including Agriculture & Agrochemicals, BFSI, Power & Energy and Hospitality, were covered by the study.

"The industry plays a vital role as a portal for unorganised sector workers to enter the organised sector and a vehicle that allows employers to take potential employees for a test drive," Lala said.
