With the government declining to defer Coca-Cola's IPO, the soft drinks major is in a dilemma. A look at what went wrong

Is Coca-Cola India in a state of shock? A few weeks ago the company launched a new energy drink by the same name. Now, it has been given an unpleasant surprise after the government turned down its request to defer an initial public offer (IPO) slated to be floated by July 2002. Coke is in a fix.

In the last eight years, it has moved to the top spot in the Rs 5,500 crore Indian soft drinks market (which includes both cola and non-cola drinks)
