Torrent consolidates power operations

The Rs 2,900 crore Torrent group has renamed Ahmedabad Electricity Company (AEC) as Torrent Power AEC and Surat Electricity Company
(SEC) as Torrent Power SEC.

The companies, along with Torrent Power Generation, are being brought under a common umbrella brand - Torrent Power, an official release said today.

"Though operating under a common brand, the companies will remain separate legal entities," the release said.

Sudhir Mehta, chairman of Torrent group, said: "While we would leverage our strengths for fuelling further growth in the power sector, Torrent Power reinforces our commitment to deliver consistently high service standards to our customers."

"After acquiring AEC and SEC, the group initiated a series of measures to improve operational efficiencies and quality of service. The companies have invested about Rs 1,100 crore towards these efforts," he added.

AEC and SEC have one of the lowest T&D losses in the country -- in the range of 12-13%, Mehta said.

Torrent Power has a generation capacity of 500 MW, and distributes power to 1.8 million consumers in the cities of Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Surat.
