Traders' association demands national trade policy

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the confederation submitted that the retail trade and small enterprises are growing in a unplanned manner.     

The traders' body said the recently released data of Economic Census 2005 established that retail trade is one of the largest sectors of employment in the country having fast growth but in an unplanned manner.      

 

CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal said there is an urgent need to modernise and upgrade the rural and urban retail trade.      

The Economic Census 2005 observed that 41.83 million establishments operated in 2005 out of which 25.54 million in Rural area and 16.29 million in Urban area existed.      

The non-agricultural establishments numbered 35.75 million, whereas 6.08 million establishments belong to agricultural sector excluding those engaged in crop production and plantation.
