Two companies have evinced interest in setting up solar thermal plants in Tamil Nadu. The plants will have a capacity of 5 Mw each, according to Mohan Verghese Chunkath, chairman and managing director, Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency. The last date for submitting the tenders was September 26.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a workshop on ‘Solar Energy for Power Generation’ organised by the Hindustan Chamber of Commerce here, Chunkath said since the project depends on the value of land, it was not possible to tell the exact cost.

However, he said for setting up a 2-2.4 million unit per year capacity plant, it would cost Rs 14-16 crore. He also did not name the companies.

Stating that Delhi-based Sapphire Industrial Infrastructure of the Moser Baer group was keen on setting up a 5-Mw solar photovoltaic power generation plant in the Sivagangai taluk, he said the project was estimated to cost over Rs 50 crore and the detailed project report was expected to be ready in a month.
