The Korba police have arrested two more technocrats in connection with the chimney collapse incident at Vedanta-controlled Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd (Balco), which claimed 41 lives in September last year.

Two engineers of Gannon Dunkerley and Company Ltd (GDCL), Sunil Singh and Alok Sharma, were arrested last evening, police sources said. They were produced before a local court from where they were sent to judicial custody till February 24.

The Korba police had earlier arrested seven people, including three engineers of Chinese construction company Shandong Electric Power Construction Corporation (Sepco), three Balco officials, including its vice-president Viral Mehta, and GDCL Project Manager Manoj Sharma.

The arrest of two GDCL engineers would now take the number of persons arrested from the company to three. Police sources said that both the engineers were assigned to supervise the construction of the chimney that came crashing down on September 23, killing 41 people.

GDCL had bagged the Rs 60-crore contract to build the chimney from Sepco, which was awarded work for setting up the 1,200-Mw power plant.
