UFO Moviez, the digital cinema venture of UFO India Ltd Digital Cinema System, is set to revolutionise the way films are distributed and exhibited in Uttar Pradesh.

About 250 cinema halls of the state will be equipped with digital cinema, a technology using digital media comprising fiber optics, satellite transmission and hard disks instead of analogue media or prints to record, transmit and replay images.

"We have begun discussions with the concerned officials in the Uttar Pradesh government and are optimistic about a positive response soon. Hopefully, the technology will be made available to the cinema halls in a month," said Rajesh Mishra, CEO-Indian operations, UFO India Ltd.

Digital cinema uses digital projectors instead of analogue projectors. It can store, transmit, retrieve and replay a huge amount of information exactly as it was originally recorded. There is more flexibility in digital cinema because the data can be manipulated effectively at a low cost.

"Through UFO technology, films are digitised and delivered via satellite directly to theatre fitted with UFO's digital cinema systems. The elimination of the print results in a saving of around Rs 60, 000 per print. A distributor can thus release a film in more cinemas at a fraction of the cost," added Mishra.

UFO Moviez is a part of the Rs 4,000 crore Group Apollo. The technology is present in about 700 cinema halls in 21 states of the country.
