UltraTech Cement's plant and 75-megawatt (Mw) captive power plant, with an investment of Rs 2,500 crore, have received approval from the expert appraisal committee under the ministry of environment. While an email sent to the company did not elicit any response, the ministry's clearance order showed the proposed plant would have a total capacity to produce 5.5 million tonnes of cement a year (mtpa) and 4.5 mtpa of clinker. The cement plant in the Karur and Dindigul districts will be spread over 136.23 hectares (ha), of which 119.44 ha is private and the rest government-owned.
