Uttar Pradesh has planned to double its power generation capacity in 2012 by adding over 4,000 Mw of power.
This would be in line to the stated objective of adding 25,000 Mw of power generation capacity in the 12th Five Year Plan to make UP a power surplus state. Power has long been the bane of industry and domestic sector and is listed as one of the most lacking infrastructure for investors.
A total of about 4,100 Mw would come up in the private, public and central sectors if things pan out as planned during 2012.
This would include Anpara D (1,000 Mw), Bajaj Hindusthan’s coal-based sugarmill power plants (315 Mw), Harduaganj 2nd unit (250 Mw), Parichha Extension (500 Mw), Sri Nagar Hydro (330 Mw), Rosa (600 Mw) and central sector (1,132 Mw).
Currently, the total available power at the disposal of the state power utility UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) stands at almost 5,000 Mw, while the rest comes from the central sector to tide over high power demand.
In the last four to five years, UP has added about 3,200 Mw to its total capacity, including Parichha (210 Mw), Harduaganj (250 Mw), Anpara C (1,200 Mw), Rosa (600 Mw), Bajaj Hindusthan coal-based sugarmill power plants (135 Mw), cogeneration (583 Mw) and Obra refurbished (200 Mw).
Meanwhile, in the 12th Plan, 4,450 Mw is planned to be added in the state sector comprising Anpara D (1,000 Mw), Panki Extension (250 Mw), Harduaganj Extension II (660 Mw), Obra C (1,320 Mw) and Anpara E (1,320 Mw).
The private sector would add another 9,200 Mw viz Bara (1,980 Mw), Karchhana (1,320 Mw), Jawaharpur (1,320 Mw), Dopaha (1,980 Mw) and Yamuna Expressway (2,000 Mw).
Besides, UP is counting big on the memorandum of understanding route, that it had pursued so vigourously last year by roping in Torrent, Welspun, Bajaj Hindusthan, Lanco etc.
It includes Bhoganipur (two separate plants of 1,320 Mw each), Lalitpur (Bajaj Hindusthan 1,980 Mw), Murka-Chitrakoot (600 Mw), Bargadh-Chitrakoot (1,980 Mw), Barabanki (250 Mw), Auraiya (250 Mw), Sandila (1,320 Mw) and Mirzapur (1,320 Mw).
In the central/joint sector, about 12,000 Mw would be added viz Ghatampur (1,980 Mw), Meja I and II (1,320 Mw each), Bilhaur (1,320 Mw) and Khurja (1,320 Mw). These projects would be undertaken by National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Neyveli Lignite etc.
The government is targetting to invest Rs 52,000 crore in transmission sector, of which private sector share would be Rs 10,000 crore. In the power distribution sector, UP plans to invest over Rs 31,000 crore of which electrification of rural hamlets would alone account for overRs 12,000 crore.
