Ramchandra Gandhi (89), chairman emeritus of Vadilal Industries Ltd., passed away in Ahmedabad following a brief illness.

“Ramchandra Gandhi, who set the foundation stone of the Vadilal Group, left for the heavenly abode on August 19,” a statement issued by the company today said here.

The statement added that Gandhi took over the business in 1942 with the support of his brother Lakshman Gandhi and turned it into a Rs 400 crore empire by 2011-12.

His business sense and forward thinking transformed a single location ice cream outlet into one of India’s biggest ice cream players over the last four decades.

He is survived by seven children. He was born on February 15, 1925.
