Videocon plans CTV unit, BPO in Bengal

Videocon Group intends to employ 25,000 people in West Bengal in the next two years. The group also has three more projects lined up in the state.

The group has sought a 100 acre plot near Rajarhat, the projected IT hub of the state, for setting up a manufacturing unit of CTV and an IT park,Venugopal Dhoot, chairman of Videocon, said.

A BPO unit near the company's existing facility at Salt Lake is also planned. Dhoot said he would discuss these issues with chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, later in the day.

In addition, the group is planning to invest over Rs 200 crore for setting up a state-of-the-art electronics unit near Siliguri in North Bengal.The plant would manufacture microwave ovens, sound system and other electronics items.

"We have acquired the land of Kanchan food products near Siliguri. We have asked for more land," Dhoot said. The group is starting the project with 1.5 acre land. Later on it may add two acres more.

"There is no dearth of quality people here. I have seen that a major chunk of the employees in IT and BPO industries in Bangalore and Hyderabad is Bengali. So we have decided to start a BPO here," Dhoot added.
