Venugopal Dhoot-led Videocon Industries is set to reopen one of its plants in the city at Salt Lake, much ahead of scheduled date next year.  The company had shut the unit in January, which mainly manufactured television and refrigerators, citing urgent need of  upgradation, to meet the demands of the new market, driven by LCD & LED.

But, owing to certain market trends the company now is likely to reopen it on 16 December, contrary to earlier plan of reopening the unit on February 1,2014.

State commerce and industries minister Partha Chatterjee said that the company is ready to reopen it on 16 December and a official from the company had met him on Friday.

Gautam Sengupta, chief advisor of the company , said he met Chatterjee today.

“We have a plan to reopen it in December. This is owing to certain new  trends in the consumer durable sectors ,” he aid by adding that CRT TV s are once again being well received in the market and also in the eastern India.

More than 200 workers of the plant would be retained, indicated Sengupta. During the time of closure of the plant he had said that  workers of the plant would be entitled to a year’s salary and other facilities that would be given to them in a normal situation. The plan was also in place to train the workers to get accustomed to the new technology once the unit goes through much needed makeover.

It seems now the company may continue on the lines of  manufacturing of CRT TV from the unit and might also add manufacturing new generation LED and LCD Tvs and refrigerators.
