Operations of Bulk Express, a floating crane that had handled about 48 million tonne cargo in the last 12 years at Visakhapatnam, were decommissioned. The floating crane was maintained by Vizag Sea Port Limited and was used for lighterage of dry bulk cargos from panamax vessels at the general cargo berth.

"After mechanisation of the general cargo berth by the Vedanta group, bulk express services had been totally stalled, hence, stopped the crane operations." said R.Kishore, Chief Executive Officer, Vizag Sea Port.

The company had sold this crane to Germany-based Oldendorff Carriers GmbH, he said, adding they could save more than $350 million in foreign exchange on ocean freight charges.
