Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) is taking steps to produce 120 million unit power by using waste gases.
“VSP has taken up six clean development mechanism (CMD) projects. Under these, the plant will stop emissions of waste gases. This apart, we will use these gases in power generation,” M V Rao, general manager - total quality management, VSP, told Business Standard.
The company will invest Rs 677 crore to set up a power plant, and by September 2013 power generation would start. Under the CDM projects, VSP will take up works like installation of energy efficient air separation unit, pulverised coal injection in blast furnaces -1 and 2, waste heat recovery from special bar mill-2, waste heat recovery from wire rod mill-2 and billet caster in steel melting shop-2. These initiatives would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 854,000 tonnes annually.
He said VSP would also get about Rs 72 crore per year as carbon credits from international bodies. The company operates a 240-mu coal-based power plant and produces 25 mu power by using waste heats. It has been using this power to run its 3-million tonne steel production unit. The company is expanding it capacity to 6.3 million tonne and therefore, from next year, it would need 400 mu power to run the plant.
