Operations at the plant had come to halt as there was no power supply for four days after the cyclone hit the port city last month

Visakhapatnam Steel Plant has reached 90 per cent production capacity in vital zones after the devastation caused by cyclone Hudhud. Operations at the steel plant had come to a grinding halt as there was no power supply for four days after the cyclone hit the port city last month.

Co-ordinated efforts have helped in bringing back the plant's operations to normalcy. Those that have already reached 90 percent of the present capacity include captive power plant, raw material handling plant and coke ovens, while blast furnaces and steel melt shop are at 60 percent of the capacity, a company release stated. VSP has successfully restored its captive power generation to around 225 Mw thereby reducing dependency on the state grid.

P Madhusudan, chairman and managing director, said all the rolling mills had commenced production and the products had started reaching the markets. Necessary steps are being put in place to ramp up the production and reach full capacities in steel melt shop and blast furnaces in one week.
