Volvo Penta has announced that it will begin locally manufacturing engines for industrial and marine applications in India next year. The engines - five and eight litre - will be manufactured at the VE Powertrain plant in Pithampur near Indore which currently manufactures drivetrains for commercial vehicles.

A new assembly line will be setup at the Pithampur plant exclusively to manufacture Volvo Penta engines. The plant is one of six in India in which the Volvo Group has invested and is part of the Volvo-Eicher commercial vehicle joint venture.

"We see a great opportunity in infrastructure development in the country," said Jonas Nilsson, Head of Volvo Penta in India, in a statement. "Our engines enable our OEMs to make their products more competitive in the market, as well as to explore the global market".

Volvo says the investment is further adding to the company's focus on serving PM Modi's Make in India pet project. The group already manufactures trucks, buses and construction equipment locally and says the new industrial engines will be tailored to suit Indian conditions and customer needs.
