Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE), part of Volvo India Private Ltd (VIPL), is set to launch excavators manufactured in the country by November. The company, which imports different capacity excavators from its Korean facility, aims to manufacture excavators up to a 30-tonne capacity for the first time in India, a top company official has said.
“We have a manufacturing plant at Peenya (on the outskirts of Bangalore), where we are making a range entire of road-making machinery. We will invest Rs 90 crore to expand the factory to double the capacity to manufacture basic range of excavators up to a 30-tonne capacity for the Indian market. Machines above this capacity will still be imported as the volumes are very low for that,” VIPL managing director A M Muralidharan said.
At present, Volvo manufactures 4,000 units of road-making machinery annually at its Bangalore facility and aims to double the capacity. The company plans to produce two basic models of 20 tonne and 30 tonne with two to three variants in each of these basic models. After stabilising the sales of these machines, the company would introduce two other models, he told Business Standard. The range from the India plan was expected to be launched during the forthcoming Excon 2011, an international expo on construction equipment in Bangalore, he said.
Volvo CE had acquired this manufacturing plant from Ingersoll-Rand as part of its global acquisition in 2008.
The company has made a sales forecast for 2015 and aims to become among the top three construction equipment manufacturers in the country.
