Internet and telephony major Videsh Sanchar Nigam (VSNL) has registered 72.06 per cent decline in net profit at Rs 111.5 crore in the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2006, compared with Rs 399.2 crore posted in corresponding period of the previous quarter.

The company's total income rose 12.98 to Rs 1,029.3 crore during the quarter under review from Rs 911 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Figures for the previous period are not comparable due to the acquisitions made during the year, VSNL informed the BSE today.

The dip in net profit, even after a jump in total income, could be attributed to rise in expenditure, interest and depreciation.

For the 12-month-period ended March 31, VSNL has posted a net profit of Rs 479.6 crore, lower from 756.4 crore recorded during the same period a year ago. The company's total income rose to Rs 4,009.8 crore during the year, up from Rs 3,410.5 crore posted during the previous financial year.

The company's board of directors has recommended a dividend of Rs 4.50 per share for the financial year 2005-06.
