To enhance exports, the steel ministry has asked Visakhapatnam Steel Plant to get international standardisation certificates from internationally recognised institutions, according to G Mohan Kumar, steel secretary.
Speaking to mediapersons here on Wednesday, he said VSP was a shore-based plant and hence its main focus should be on exports. "The plant's product quality is as good as British steel. If we get international quality certificates, our products would be well accepted across the globe," he added.
Stating that the Centre was keen on divesting 10 per cent stake in VSP, he said this would be completed by the end of this fiscal. The disinvestment process was postponed twice in 2012 due to unpredictable market conditions and worker unions agitations.

Kumar also said there was no proposal to merge VSP with NMDC for assured supply of iron ore to the former. However, the Union government was seriously trying to provide captive mines to the steep plant.
On Wednesday, he inaugurated the 20.6-Mw sinter cooler waster heat recovery power plant at VSP. The plant has been build with an outlay of Rs 260 crore through an MoU with NEDO-Japan. The government is targeting to increase steel production to 300 million tonne, according to him.
