Just less than a year since WalmartLabs’ decided to set up a centre in India, the R&D team in the country has started contributing in areas of big data, analytics and search algorithm.
According to Jeremy King, Senior Vice-President and Chief Technology Officer of Walmart Global e-Commerce, three out of the 10 R&D teams set up at WalmartLabs in India have already productized various ecommerce platforms. He said the India team developed the analytics and machine learning of the new search engine, Polaris what the company recently launched for Walmart.com.
“Our teams in Bangalore are highly talented and focus mainly on the areas like machine learning, social analytics and big data infrastructure. We have made several new platforms to make the consumer experience better and the team in @Walmart labs has helped in doing that,” said King.
WalmartLabs is responsible for creating the next generation products and platforms for Walmart’s eCommerce business globally.
Apart from the search engine, the India teams were also responsible for building the payment infrastructure for the e-commerce business of Walmart and played key role in developing applications for ipad and android devices.
WalmartLabs which started operations in India in November last year employs about 125 engineers. The company has announced to increase the headcount to 200 by the end of this year.
