In one single deal, David Beckham and his biggest sponsors, Adidas, may have rewritten the rules of commerce in sport.
While Nike has all these years been the big player with some of the biggest names in their stable, Adidas pulled off the biggest one with Beckham, who is already setting more records in the business of sport than any other sportsperson dead or alive.
Interestingly, Beckham has been wearing Adidas since he was 12 but did not enter a professional contract till he was 20.
He has been with them for the last seven years and the current contract was to run for another three years.
However, what may have prompted a sudden signing up could have been the latest rumour doing the rounds that arch-rivals Nike were on the prowl.
They are believed to have been working on a deal which would have offered Beckham a massive amount to change his brand.
