Wipro, which hived off some of its non-core businesses a year ago, has decided to shut its computer hardware manufacturing business. The Bangalore-based company said it would stop making desktops, laptops and servers under the Wipro brand “after evaluating the changing market scenario and customer needs” and would focus on the core IT services.
Wipro would continue to provide PCs as part of its offerings in large integrated deals. The number of employees at the PC business could not be ascertained. Wipro said it would redeploy the affected employees to other units. The company said it would fulfill its warranty and maintenance obligations.
“Our vision is to strengthen our position as a leading system integrator,” said Soumitro Ghosh, senior vice-president and head of Wipro Infotech.
A month earlier, HCL Infosystems had decided to exit the PC business and focus more on distribution and services.
