Wipro Technologies, the third-largest IT exporter, today announced the inauguration of its new Melbourne development centre.

The 150-seater centre, located in south Melbourne, would provide consulting, software development, testing and business process services to domestic and global companies in Australia, including Origin Energy, the Bangalore-headquartered company said in a statement.

Wipro started operations in Australia in 2002 and today has a strong customer base across the region with operations in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Melbourne was chosen as a location due to its conducive business environment, ready talent pool and the city’s excellent infrastructure.

The centre currently employs close to 130 people mostly Australian nationals and the IT major plans to increase the headcount as and when the business demands. The new centre will broaden Wipro’s service capabilities along with its existing presence in Paramatta and Adelaide, it was stated.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Victorian premier John Brumby and senior vice-president and chief sales and operations officer Wipro Australia Rajat Mathur.

"Australia is an important market for Wipro and we enjoy a good deal of business success here as Australian companies demonstrate a continued appetite for our global service delivery model," Mathur said.
