Work on to ease traffic in twin cities

The department of urban infrastructure and surface transport will prepare an action plan to decongest traffic in the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad. The action plan will include construction of infrastructure facilities like over-bridges, under-bridges, flyovers, by-pass roads, ring roads and introduction of mono rail.

A preliminary meeting to discuss the plan was held at deputy commissioner’s office in Dharwad on Friday with joint secretary to the department of urban infrastructure and surface transoport Mohemmed Mohsin chairing the meeting. Police commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar, DC Darpan Jain, ACP (traffic) Sanjeev Patil, RTO Balawalli and other senior officials were present.

Speaking at the meeting, Mohsin said one of the measures to reduce traffic congestion was encouraging the use of public transport system. Delhi-based ICRA Consulting Services has taken up the survey of traffic system in Hubli-Dharwad. The company has also prepared a tentative plan.

 

Mohsin advised ICRA officials to consult local officials of the departments concerned, elected representatives and public before finalising the action plan.

Police commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar pointed out that the traffic congestion would be more in the days to come on the road to high court circuit bench and suggested that the models adopted by metros in decongesting traffic should be studied and adopted in Hubli-Dharwad with suitable modification keeping in view the development over the next 20 years.

Deputy commissioner Darpan Jain asked the ICRA officials to consider the places identified by the transport and police departments for decongesting the traffic while finalizing the action plan.

ICRA officials made a power point presentation of the areas prone to traffic congestion and the possible remedial measures.
