Japanese automaker Yamaha's new plant in Chennai was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today.

The Rs 1,600-crore plant was inaugurated at Global Investors Summit, organised by Tamil Nadu.

Yamaha expects the Chennai facility to be fully operational by 2018, with a production capacity of 1.8 million units per annum. The facility will employ around 2,700 people.

The company had earlier said it decided to postpone operations by almost a year as the economy was not doing that well.
