Japanese two-wheeler maker Yamaha today said it is ready to launch gearless scooters in the Indian market to tap the potential in the segment.

"We have completed the feasibility study and plan to launch new gearless scooters in the Indian market shortly," India Yamaha Motor National Business Head Pankaj Dubey told PTI here.

"We will enter the market with exciting products in the scooter segment. We are confident that our products will do well...Gearless scooters are more in demand in the market," Dubey said.

He, however, declined to give any time-frame for the launch of the scooters.

The Japanese major is well-known for its gearless technology for two-wheelers worldwide. The company sells more scooters compared to motor-cycles in the Asian market.

"We are good in both technology and product in the scooter segment globally," he said.

The company has conducted the feasibility study to focus on areas such as the model to be introduced and a possible time-frame for launching the product in the Indian market.

Asked whether gearless scooters would be manufactured from its existing plant in India, Dubey declined to comment.

However, the likelihood of them being manufactured from its existing plants (where it makes motor-cycles) is high.

"The domestic market is conducive for gearless scooter. Globally, we are very strong in the scooter segment...We are confident of a good performance here as well," Dubey said.

Yamaha has manufacturing units at Surajpur in Uttar Pradesh and Faridabad in Haryana and produces motor-cycles both for domestic and overseas markets.
