If leading healthcare company, Zydus Cadila has its way, Gujarat may soon get an institute dedicated to life sciences soon. All set to commence operations in the year 2011, the pharma major has plans to accomodate 1000 students in the first batch.

"We will soon set up a college of life sciences called Ramanbhai College of Life Sciences. Although it is too early to talk about the plans, the college will be based in Ahmedabad. We plan to be ready with the college by mid-2010 and start our first batch by 2011 with about 1000 students. The college will offer various courses including those in basic and applied sciences," said Pankaj Patel, chairman and managing director, Zydus Cadila, on the sidelines of the 4th international symposium on 'Advances in Cardiometabolic Research.'

Patel, however, refused to comment on the investment for the institute. The symposium, being co-hosted by Indiana University, US and Centre for Integrative Genomics, Lausanne, got underway at the Zydus Research Centre with the coming together of more than 500 delegates from all over the country and abroad.

The company recorded a net profit after tax of Rs 72.24 crore for the quarter ended December 31, 2008.
