Soon after taking charge as the minister for science and technology, S Jaipal Reddy denied reports that he was unhappy to leave the petroleum ministry. “I was never happy when I was given petroleum (ministry); now, too, I am not unhappy (at losing the portfolio),” said Reddy.

On the perception that certain corporate houses were behind his transfer, he said, “In all matters, it has been my policy to be a faithful party man and a truthful minister,” he said.

Asked whether he had been victimised, Reddy said: “My relationship with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is excellent. He took me into confidence about the change in the portfolio. I never haggle or bargain for portfolios.” He added: “No minister is told about the reason for change in portfolio,” giving a glimpse into his disappointment.

On a more philosophical vein, Reddy said, “No man of integrity is ever destructive.”

Even before the change in portfolios was announced on Sunday, there were reports Reddy was upset with his removal from the high-profile petroleum ministry and being sent to the science and technology ministry. Reddy kept away from journalists all yesterday and most of today.
