219 kg of gold seized from Kerala airports in one year

Customs Department had collectedaround Rs 5 cr as duty against import

Smuggled gold to the tune of 219 kg, which is worth Rs 76.65 crore, was seized from international airports in Kerala during the last one year ending April 20, 2014.

According to records of the Customs department, Kozhikode airport topped the list with 134 kg of gold worth Rs 46.90 crore followed by Cochin international airport at 64 kg and worth Rs 22.40 crore; and Thiruvananthapuram airport with 21 kg worth Rs 7.35 crore.

Six airline staff had been arrested in connection with illegal smuggling. According to sources, roughly ten times of the gold seized were smuggled to the country during the last one year period.
 

During this period, 156 kg of gold was brought into India, remitting duties through these airports.

The Customs department had collected around Rs 5 crore as duty against the import.

Kozhikode topped the table with a revenue of Rs 3.32 crore followed by Cochin with Rs 1.12 crore and Thiruvananthapuram with Rs 55.57 lakh.
