A Chhattisgarh village sarpanch (head) collected Rs 25 lakh from a contractor to facilitate illegal mining of sand from the area. The matter rocked up for a debate in the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly Monday when opposition Congress members raised the issue during question hour. The members drew the attention of the state government towards the anarchy committed by the representatives of the panchayat that had been powered to give sanction for sand mining.
"Under the shelter of the panchayat office bearers, the contractors are illegally mining sand," senior Congress legislator Dhanendra Sahu said.
