Action promised against firms selling unbranded drugs

Officials said action will be taken against the unknown company which produced and marketed louse powder without serial number and statutory warnings

Two very young children have died after accidentally consuming unbranded louse powder kept in their houses in the district, bringing to focus production and marketing of such drugs without batch number and warning message by unknown companies.

Drug Controller department officials here today said it had received reports that an 18-month old boy Kesavan and two-year old Hamsad Begum died after licking the powder in their houses in Aruppukotai area.

Both the children were admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai in the last two weeks and died.

The officials said action would be taken against the unknown company which produced and marketed louse powder without serial number and statutory warnings.
 
Drug Controller Vijayalakshmi said they would seize the product from the petty shops which normally sold them and send them for lab examination.

The petty shops had been warned against marketing bogus products in view of the death of the two children.
