Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, who has been named as the next Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, will be sworn in on March 15. The 38-year-old engineer's father, Mulayam Singh Yadav, has relinquished the position in favour of his son, citing health issues.
In a statement today in Lucknow, Akhilesh said that his party would fulfil all the promises contained in its election manifesto. He asserted that no discrimination would be made on the basis of caste and creed.
Akhilesh also claimed that his government would soon appoint honest officers in key positions and that suitable action would be taken against non-performers. He said law and order would assume priority in the state.
The chief minister-in-waiting also said that the vacant place in memorials constructed by the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party might be used for opening up medical or educational institutions.
