All three, four and five-star hotels in Chennai have seen excess demand as the rains brought transport systems to a standstill.

All the hotels are fully occupied and at one five star hotel there are around 20-25 people in waiting to get accomodation even though management says rooms are fully occupied.

The Chennai Airport was shut down on Tuesday night and is expected to remain so till Thursday morning as water-logging has affected the take off and landing.

According to sources, at least 400 passengers stranded in the airport are waiting to come out and search for a place to stay till the situation improves.

Industry sources say Chennai  has around 7,000 hotel rooms available in five-star and other categories across 250 properties.

Industry representatives have said all hotels in the city are booked for next three days as people are not able to move anywhere.

Meanwhile, some of the auditoriums, schools, guest houses and individual houses with spare rooms and spaces have invited people stranded in the floods to stay till the rains slow down and water recedes.
