Two army personnel were killed and a third gone missing after their border checkpost was buried by an avalanche in Pithoragarh district on Monday night.

The avalanche occurred at the Sialake border checkpost, which is manned by the jawans of the Kumaon Scouts regiment.

Heavy rain and snowfall has occurred in Uttarakhand for the past two to three days.

Five jawans, who were rescued from the post, have been rushed to a district hospital in Pithoragarh. Sources said they are out of danger.

The Army has deployed helicopters to search for the missing jawan. But the inclement weather was hampering the rescue operation, police said. Additional Director-General of Police Anil Raturi said one person died after a house collapsed due to a landslide at Kapkot in Bageshwar district on Monday night following heavy rains in the area.

"We have sounded an alert in the entire state," said Raturi.
