Cricket buffs in the state now have a reason to smile as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to declare the Barabati stadium at Cuttack as the venue for hosting cricket test matches.

Sources said the officials of Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) on Friday made a request at the BCCI working committee meeting here to accord test venue status to the Barabati stadium.

The move from the association comes barely a day after a four-member BCCI team inspected the stadium.

The BCCI officials had expressed satisfaction over the existing infrastructure at the stadium to hold test matches.

“We are hopeful that we will get the written approval (to hold test matches at Barabati Stadium) in a month. Only official announcement is awaited as the officials who visited the stadium have expressed their satisfaction. In 2015, Barabati is likely to host a test match,” said Ashirbad Behera, OCA secretary, who participated at the working committee meeting.

The stadium in Cuttack had lost its test status after hosting two test matches with a gap of eight years.
