Firing a fresh salvo at the Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee’s move to reach out to the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj for bringing a “no-confidence motion”, the Congress on Monday stated that its association with the BJP will drive away minorities from her in West Bengal.
Banerjee had called Swaraj on Sunday seeking support for bringing a no-confidence motion against the Congress-led UPA II government. The West Bengal chief minister had even urged “friends in the Left” to support the move, citing policy issues like foreign direct investment in retail and corruption allegations.
“If she ties up with the BJP, it will show her real face. It will bring out the double standard of making the minorities believe that she is with them and at the same time tying up with a party with communal colours. The move is going to drive away minorities, specially Muslim voters, from her. At the same time, she is going to fail miserably in her venture to topple the government,” said former state minister and Congress leader Manas Ranjan Bhunia.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is set to meet in Delhi soon to decide on its stance, while the CPI has already expressed willingness to extend support to no-trust motion by any party.
“She has no numbers, the TMC would require support of 50 Lok Sabha MPs to introduce a no-confidence motion, but it has only 19. She is now portraying herselves as lady Jayaprakash Narayan,” Bhunia adds.
