Following the crackdown of Kerala police on Amway India Enterprises top executives, Andhra Pradesh police on Tuesday cautioned the public against participating or joining the company schemes or "any of its kind as the business is illegal."
Pointing out that the state government had issued an order (GO Ms No 178) banning even advertisements of Amway products, the police said the company had been promoting its products "through money circulation by conducting membership drive, cheating the public by luring and enticing them with incentives and commissions." The state high court as well as the Supreme Court have upheld the order, T Krishna Prasad, additional director general of police, CID, stated in a press release.
According to Prasad, the activities of Amway are covered under money circulation and "are in clear violation of the Prize Chits and Money Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act, 1978." There are several cases already registered in the state against the company. Amway India managing director, William Pinkney, is also one of the accused in a case and is attending the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate here in this connection.
