CBI Court sends Dy Commissioner of Central Excise for 3 yrs RI

He was arrested in a disproportionate assets case filed by investigating agency

Venkatasami, XIII Addl. Special Judge for CBI cases, Chennai has convicted A Ashokan, Deputy Commissioner of Central Excise for three years of rigorous imprisonment in a disproportionate assets case filed by the CBI.

The Anti Corruption Branch of CBI,Chennai registered and investigated a case in Crime No RC 14(A)/1998 against Ashokan, Deputy Commissioner of Central Excise on the allegations that during the check period September 1989 to January 1998 while working as public servant in various capacities, acquired assets to the tune of Rs 21,40,140 in his name and in the name of his wife Bharathi Ashokan which was disproportionate to the extent of 87.74 per cent against his known sources of income and expenditure incurred by him.

 

On completion of investigation, CBI filed chargesheets against Ashokan and his wife Bharathi under sections 120 B IPC r/w 13(2)r/w 13(1)(e) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

On completion of trial, the Court has convicted Ashokan and was sentenced him to undergo Rigorous Imprisonment of three years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000.

Further, the Court ordered for confiscation of disproportionate assets of Rs 12,72,961 to the State.However Bharathi Ashokan was acquitted from the case.
