Chennai floods: Delegation from Health Ministry arrives to take stock

A delegation from DIPP is expected to arrive as well to assess industrial loss

After sending a high-level team to make on-the-spot assessment of flood situation in Tamil Nadu, the Centre is now sending a delegation from the Health Ministry to Tamil Nadu to extend all possible support. The seven-member team will conduct rapid health assessment of the flood hit areas and advice the state on public health measures. The Central Team has regrouped itself into three teams and is visiting flood affected areas, including the health facilities. Soon a delegation from Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion will also be arriving to assess industry loss .

DIPP's high-level Central delegation will devise support mechanisms for speedy and quick revival of Tamil Nadu industries that are affected by Chennai Floods.
 

According to ASSOCHAM estimate, the financial loss due to rainfall in Chennai and several parts of Tamil Nadu may exceed the Rs 15,000 crore mark. Small and medium enterprises, automobile and engineering industries, information technology (IT), ITeS, textile, tourism and a host of other sectors have been worst affected by the massive rainfall.

Many of the factories have shut units for nearly five days and partially started the factory yesterday and today. Initial estimate is that flood loss for the general insurance industry could be around Rs 1,500 crore, which would be three times of the value of insurers' claims.

Meanwhile, Chennai is crawling back to normalcy with rains stopping on Tuesday morning.

While schools and colleges remain closed in 12 districts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai and will remain closed tomorrow, offices, shops and other commercial establishments have opened . IT companies have given options to the employees to work from home.
