Amid major protests against the citizenship law across the country, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Monday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of throwing the nation into an extreme communal divide.
"Very unfortunate, a nation which went through the trauma of partition and because of the sane leadership of Nehru, Patel, Azad and Ambedkar became the largest successful democracy in the world is being once again being thrown into an extreme communal divide by Modi-Shah government. Sad," Singh said on Twitter.
Singh also urged the people of the country to stand together irrespective of their caste, creed or religion to fight this "ugly virus of communal hatred otherwise it would be too late".

Curfew eased off in Guwahati, Dibrugarh
Curfew was on Monday relaxed in Guwahati from 6 am to 9 pm, with the city limping back to normalcy, following week-long protests over the amended Citizenship Act, Assam Police Chief Public Relations Officer Rajiv Saikia said.
Night curfew in Guwahati, however, will continue to be in force.
Assam's Additional DGP (law and order) G P Singh had on Sunday tweeted that the decision to extend the hours of relaxation was taken in view of the improvement in the law- and-order situation.
"The situation having improved considerably, the day curfew is being withdrawn from Guwahati from 6AM of December 16th. Night curfew would remain from 9 PM till 6 AM next day," Singh had tweeted.
In Dibrugarh district, curfew has been eased off from 6 am to 8 pm.

Accusing the Congress and its allies of fuelling violence over the amended Citizenship Act, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the opposition's actions prove that the decision to pass the bill was "1,000 per cent correct", and those indulging in arson "can be identified by their clothes".
"The Congress and its allies are stoking fire over the Citizenship Act, but people of northeast have rejected violence," he said during an election rally in Jharkhand.

Anti-Citizenship Act: Adityanath appeals for peace after clashes in parts of UP
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday night made an appeal to the residents to maintain peace and harmony and not pay attention to rumours, after protests were held in parts of the state, including at Aligarh Muslim University, against the amended citizenship law.
In a statement, Adityanath said, "People should not pay any attention to the rumours about Citizenship Amendment Act being spread by some vested interests."

Anti-Citizenship Act protests: Delhi Minorities Commission directs Delhi police to release 'injured' students
The Delhi Minority Commission (DMC) issued a direction to the SHO of Kalkaji Police Station on Sunday night to release the "injured" students of Jamila Millia University held there or take them for treatment at a reputed hospital without any delay.
The commission also directed the officer to file a compliance report by 3 pm on Monday.
In the order, DMC Chairman Zafarul Islam Khan said failure to implement it will attract appropriate action.

Gates of several stations were closed due to violence following protest and arson against the amended citizenship law in South Delhi on Sunday. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation closed the entry and exit gates of 13 stations for several hours in view of the violent protests near New Friends' Colony.
