Congress in West Bengal today refused to buy Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's clarification about her 'Shall I go and and beat (him up)?' remark about the Prime Minister and said none had used such language against the top executive post-holder of the country.
"Yesterday she said this. It was recorded and shown by several electronic media. It was her voice. Now, she is saying she has not said it. Then who said it? Was it a ghost that said it?" WBPCC President Pradip Bhattacharjee said.
"This is nothing new, earlier also she has denied her statements," the senior Congress leader said.
"How can the Chief Minister of a state use such words against the Prime Minister? She is a strange example of a sick mentality. Never before has the Chief Minister of any state used such words against the Prime Minister," he said.
He said there could be an argument between a state government under one party and the central government under another, "but nobody has used such words".
The Chief Minister had yesterday said "I had have met the PM ten times on the issue of fertilizer price hike. I cannot do more than this. Shall I go and beat (him up)?".
She, however, said today "a section of the media is constantly distorting my words for their own vested interests. Yesterday I didn't say that I will beat PM."
Bhattacharya also criticised the state government on the law and order front and hoped that a central team would visit the state soon to assess the situation.
Bhattacharya said that during the just-concluded Chintan Shivir of Congress in Jaipur, he had met Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and informed him about the 'worsening' law and order in the state.
"He said he had received my letter which I had sent him a few days ago on worsening law and order in the state," Bhattacharya said.
"I had requested him to sent a central team to take stock of the ground situation. I hope that it will visit the state very soon," he added.
