Congress sweeps Assam Panchayat polls

Barring five districts, the party is all set to secure its dominance across the state

The Congress has swept the Assam panchayat polls, which was witness to large-scale violence between various communities that left more than 20 people dead and may hundreds injured.

With 174 zilla parishad constituencies, the Congress is all set to secure its dominance across the state. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), a pro-minority party, with 49 seats, secured the second spot, with Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bharatiya Janat Party (BJP) making it to distant third and fourth spots with 16 and 10 seats, respectively. Counting of votes was still going on in many districts, including the Barak Valley, till the filing of this report.

The Congress was also leading in the majority of the ‘anchalik parishads’ and ‘gaon’ panchayat president seats.

At least 20 people were killed during the third phase of polling in RHAC when police and security forces opened fire at several places at mobs opposing panchayat election in RHAC. In an another incident of police firing, three people lost their lives in Dhubri district when they protested delays in declaration of election result and went berserk.

The panchayat polls were held in three phases and a total of 1.27 crore voters exercised their franchise.
