Congress Party leader Rashid Alvi on Monday welcomed the petrol price slash, and linked the diesel hike to trends in the international market.
" I am happy that petrol prices have been slashed. The diesel price has increased because of international market," Alvi said.
Meanwhile, the Janata Dal (United) has also lauded the depreciation of petrol prices.
"We welcome the decision to reduce petrol price but reduction is very nominal. They should have reduced more," JD(U) leader K.C. Tyagi said.
Earlier in the day, petrol prices were cut by Rs 3.05 per litre, and diesel prices were raised by 50 paise per litre.
This is the first reduction in petrol rates in over five months, and comes as the most significant depreciation in over five years.
