SC notice of Centre, Delhi govt on plea for rehabilitation, vaccination of beggars amid pandemic
The Supreme Court sought the responses of the Centre and the Delhi government on Tuesday on a plea seeking rehabilitation and vaccination of beggars and vagabonds in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The apex court, which made it clear that it would not take an "elitist view" that no beggars should be allowed on the streets as this is a socio-economic problem, asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to assist it in the matter.

India recorded less than 30,000 fresh Covid-19 cases after 132 days while its active caseload fell below 400,000 after 124 days on Tuesday, according to Union health ministry data.
India recorded 29,689 new coronavirus infections that pushed its tally of Covid-19 cases to 31,440,951 while the death toll climbed to 421,382 with 415 daily fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.
The active cases have declined to 398,100 and comprise 1.27 per cent of the total infections. The national Covid-19 recovery rate has improved to 97.39 per cent, it stated.
The number of active cases fell by 13,089 in a span of 24 hours.

1 new Covid-19 case in Andamans, tally rises to 7,530
The Covid-19 tally of Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 7,530 on Tuesday as one more person tested positive for the infection, a health bulletin said.
Two more persons were cured of the disease, taking the total number of recoveries to 7,387, it said.

Brazil scraps Covaxin's EUA application after Bharat Biotech terminates pact with partners
After suspending the proposed clinical trials of Bharat Bioetchs COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin, Brazil has now scrapped the Emergency Use Authorisation request made by the Indian company for the jab.
The Brazilian health regulator's decisioncomesafter the vaccine maker informed the South American country about thetermination of its pact with its partners in that country.
According to a statement issued by the National Health Surveillance Agency of Brazil, Anvisa, its Collegiate Board on Saturday unanimously decided "to close the process that dealt with the temporary authorization of emergency use, on an experimental basis, of the Covaxin vaccine".

The current recovery rate stands at 97.39 per cent with 42,363 patients recovering ion the last 24 hours.
The country's active caseload is less than 400,000 after 124 days and is currently at 398,100.

Maharashtra: 305 new cases in Thane, 11 more deaths
Thane has added 305 new cases of coronavirus, raising the infection count in the Maharashtra district to 5,43,240, an official said on Tuesday.
Besides these new cases reported on Monday, the virus also claimed the lives of 11 more people, which took the death toll in the district to 10,988, he said.
The COVID-19 mortality rate in Thane stood at 2.02 per cent, he added.
In neighbouring Palghar district, the COVID-19 case count has gone up to 1,29,299, while the death toll has reached 3,117, another official said.

Global Covid-19 caseload tops 195 million
The overall global Covid-19 caseload has topped 195 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 4.18 million and vaccinations soared to over 3.84 billion, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
In its latest update on Tuesday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload, death toll and the total number of vaccine doses administered stood at 195,346,146, and 4,182,831, respectively.

The US remains committed to helping India recover from its devastating second wave of coronavirus and stands ready to support it until the virus is defeated, a top Biden administration official said on Monday.
With 39,361 people testing positive for coronavirus infection in a day, India's total tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 3,14,11,262, while the daily positivity was recorded above three per cent after 35 days, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Monday. The COVID-19 death toll climbed to 4,20,967 with 416 fresh fatalities.
The active cases have increased to 4,11,189 and comprise 1.31 per cent of the total infections. An increase of 2,977 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours, it said.

The Covid-19 pandemic is hitting conflict-ridden and impoverished countries much worse this year than in 2020, with many facing higher caseloads and rising deaths, the U.N.'s deputy humanitarian chief warned Monday.
Ramesh Rajasingham said in a closed briefing to the U.N. Security Council that these surges are being fueled by a lack of access to vaccines, an easing of public health measures, increased social mixing, and the spread of the delta variant to at least 124 countries, including 17 fragile and conflict-affected nations.

Covid-19 vaccination gives 97.4% protection from coronavirus infection
The Covid-19 vaccination provides protection at a rate of 97.4 per cent against coronavirus infection, said a study conducted by Apollo Hospital Group to investigate the occurrence of SARS-CoV-2 infection among the symptomatic-vaccinated healthcare workers (HCWs) and to analyze the severity of their disease.
The study conducted on 3,235 HCW (2480 received both doses while 755 received a single dose) showed that Covid-19 infection after vaccination is primarily minor and did not lead to severe disease.
